A true Jake Brake won't be possible to put on, as it will require an alteration of the valve train........ But an exhaust butterfly valve could be done, though it wont give you that BRRRRAAAAAATTTTTTT sound you're after.

I love the sound of a big rig using its engine brake.... Sometimes they sneak up out of knowwhere and you hear "BVVVRRAAAAAAAAA"
I live by a highway(well its the main road and technically a highway) and on a slight downgrade with a corner.. I hear jake brakes all the time.. I think I can tell them apart by manufacture now.. I used to love flipping the switch in the cab of my dads truck for the jake brake... good ole times |

My 300SD will maintain road speed of 65 mph from the top to the bottom of a 9% grade (AZ hwy 87 Phx to Payson, FWIW) in D, I don't know what's gonna dictate a shift to 3rd.
Wish you could put a Jake on a 617, I'd like that!

Second problem with a Jake is that that by the nature that they work, if you could mod the valve train correctly, you'd have a problem with the pistons kissing your valves..........goodbye!

If someone were doing it, wouldn't it be possible to have the valve open slightly before or after the piston has reached the top? Would lower the efficency of the brake, but avoids valves hitting the piston. I'd love to put one on my car. (and bypass the muffler and resonators while its in use!)

Mercedes says you can in the manual, I have never went down a mountain where I needed it but I see no reason not to.
In traffic espeicaly with the turbo charged engines I find its better to keep the tranny in 2nd or 3rd. That way it isn't always hunting.

I downshift into 3rd usually only when I'm trying to get around someone who thinks they're driving a model T, or on slight up hill curves and corners. if I do it right it does sound like a jake..
