installing only 1 engine mount?
Should engine mounts always be installed as a pair?
I thought I was ordering two, but I only got one. The shaking in my car seems to be focused on the right, air filter side. The turbo and air filter vibrate and shake like mad. The air filter mount closest to the side of the car screws up into the air filter housing and is held in with a nut. At idle, it shakes and vibrates so hard, the nut works itself off the screw within ten minutes. So it seems like I should put a new engine mount on that side of the car. Does that make any sense, or does it need both?

There's no specific danger in replacing only one motor mount. In your situation I would do the worst one right now, then catch the other later. After all, most people do one side first and then the other - not necessarily in the same day.

I bought 2 along with 2 engine shocks and the tranny mount.
I replaced 1 engine mount and both shocks. I would have replaced both mounts, but a rounded off 8mm lower mount bolt on the passenger side stopped that. All now are done except for the tranny mount. Danged oil leak from the passenger side has turned the tranny mount to mush and I am waiting to do that when I replace the turbo and oil drain tube seals.

I'm guessing the it might need a valve adjustment job so shaking will stop. I adjusted mine recently (never did it b4 and was shaky) and what a difference it made. I can literally say the shaking stopped. I tell you its smoooooth!!!
Never did valve adjustment b4.... but I am now a strong advocate. I did it on the 85 D since am using it this winter. I got the 84 D parked for the winter but I plan to do the same soon. Its a pretty easy thing to do once you are in it. BTW, it takes a 14mm open wrench to adj the valves. After seeing what the hazet wrench looked like, I just went to Sears and got a long 14mm combination wrench and bent it to look like the Hazet. Used torch, vise and a good pair of pliers. I'll take a pic sometime. You can change the mounts but I think the source of the problem should be fixed. Otherwise, shaking will continue, imho.

It's my understanding that due to the engine torgue, one side always wears out faster. I just swapped engines in my diesels and we switched the motor mounts to the opposite sides.

I did a valve adjustment two weeks ago. They were all really tight. I've got more pickup now, but it still shakes and vibrates pretty good. I'm pretty sure it's the engine mounts.
