AMG uses 0w40 like all the other MB's these days. I am not an engineer and do not know how to design an engine, so I tend to follow what the engineer's in Germany's lead. If they thought 15w40 was fine for many years who am I to say it isn't.

Well again thats just how i feel. The M119 was started some odd years ago. Oil has changed since then and i dont believe 15w40 dino oil is the best choice for the engine.
Especially if hatty is saying that 0w40 is the correct oil. going from a very thick 15w40 to a 0w40 looks like standards have changed and i would have no problem switching over to the 0w40 weight. But i would never put a 15/40 weight in that engine, The thicker the oil is not always better.

You would be better off with 0w40 then, extend the drain intervails out fo 5k-8k miles to offset the extra cost.
To much oil pressure is a bad thing to espcialy for M119's, want to put off that oil bridge replacement as long as possible!

Delo 400!!!
Hassalgren Racing http://www.hasselgren.com/ (supplied all motors to the Toyota Atlantic Series for 8 years) uses Delo 400 exclusivley for break\in and racing there engines. They used to use Kendal GT1 (Kendal was sold formula changed) they also looked at Mobil 1 (found rust in motors after prolonged use) then they called Chevron and were really impressed with the formulas and additives. They also resently went 2nd and 6th at the Rolex 24 (Delo 400).

My work has been getting alot of new ELF synthetic oils. and i was reading the specs on the back of the bottles.
ELF 5w30 LSX meet MB 229.31 and 229.51 ELF EXCELLIUM FULL-TECH 0W30 meet MB 229.5 Both meet MB specs and are 30 weights. These should be ok in my 420 no?

I am kinda ignoring any racing claims on a motor oil, there use really doesn't hold up to daily drivers. I mean, they change the oil after each race, they tear down or partially rebuild their motors daily, they have unlimited money for R&D and in those circumstances, you could use dishwashing liquid and have pretty good results. sure motor oil takes a beating and specific weights and formulations can make a difference in a race motor, but to apply what race compainies use to a daily driver makes no sense.
