The euro version has the a/c compressor (sanden?) located @ the bottom of the engine.
Mr. Byrz, Cummins 4BT swaps into SJ are fairly common. Check out the the 4BT forum http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/index.php and the International Full Size Jeep Assoc. http://www.ifsja.org/ for some details on the swap

It's something I've wanted to do for awhile but don't have the SJ or the 4BT yet

So I had to find another engine for my jeep and I decided on trying an olds 350 diesel got a low millage GM replacement engine with all the updates done so it should be a good motor and allot easier transplant the front sump on the 617 made it almost inpossible to clear all the suspention and stearing parts. When I get to actaully work on it I will still update you guys on how it goes and pic's if you want them
Please, for the love for all that is holy, do not use the GM 350 diesel. I believe this engine is the reason diesels are not popular in the US. This might just be the poorest designed diesel engine ever made or a tie with the MB rod-bender.

We had one back in the late 80s and it spent more time in the shop than it did on the road. My step mother couldn't drive a stick so my dad traded his 4-speed manual 240d in on it. If that transaction had not occurred I would still have his 240d today. The olds has probably been recycled into a washing machine 20 years ago.

many people hate that poor motor and if you take the time, do the research and take care of it its a fine motor, go to oldsdiesel.com before you decide that its a worthless pile of scrap by the end of production it was a darn good motor it was just the pre DX blocks that had allot of problems. Pulling around a jeep it should last for a long long time I will get some pics when I get time to work on it

What was the production years of the good version of that engine?

Also, I was really looking forward to seeing you original project done. I have a 89 Cherokee myself and I love the thought of having a 617 in it. I also know someone locally who has abandoned his project because of the oil pan interference with the steering / suspension and is selling his project for $1500 with a 1985 300TD engine / trans that had 128K on it.

Oil pan problems aren't insurmountable.

Not sure how your Jeep is configured but this truck has a passenger-side differential.
