1991 300D IP questions
A friends IP "failed" recently. I will relay what I was told. Their IP was leaking. They took it to a shop that had worked on the car before. The shop charged them about 250 to replace the seal. Other then leaking a little, the car was running fine. Since they got it back it has been smoking white smoke all of the time. WHen they brought it back to the shop, the guy told them that the IP had failed and it would be 1200 for a new one, plus labor. He also said that this is a common occurence when the pump has seals replaced. I asked if he told them this risk before doing the work, they said no. They also said that he did not offer to credit the 250 towards the new pump. White smoke all of the sudden sounds like retarded timing to me, I have not looked at the car yet. Does any one know if this is a common occurence in this year/model? Or is the shop full of it? It seems very fishy to me. Thanks! John
