Rear view mirrow replacement (W123)

When I bought my 82 300D Turbo several weeks ago there was no rear view mirror, but the stalk was there. I used a mirror out of my old Chevy pick up and secured it with plastic wire ties. Got a used MB mirror from Potomac German Auto Parts (thanks guys) but can't get the old stalk off. I tried to pry with a screwdriver, pushed, pulled, everything with no luck. What's the trick to get it off? Can the mirror be removed from the stalk? I didn't want to try that and break the new mirror.
Thanks,

Get a good grip on the stalk of the mirror and pull hard toward the rear of the car. The stalk will pop off. Getting the new mirror on is a little bit more challenging. There are spring loaded pins in the base of the stalk. Set the pin on one side in the recess and then force the mirror base up and into the other recess. I have found that it takes quite a bit of force to accomplish this, but then again I am a weakling.

Good luck,
Tom

On the reinstallation place a little (just a very small amount) gear oil on contact area where the pins contact the base mounting plate and follow the instruction in the above post and it will go without too much effort.

The above process for removal is correct. Even states so in the shop manual. HOWEVER, on my '77 300D I followed the above procedure, and promptly pulled the bracket along with the screws that "were" in the roof!!

Thanks to all that helped. I finally got it off last night. Between this forum and others, I was told to push it forward, pull it back and push to the right. I tried every which way and it wouldn't budge. Finally I used a large mallet and gave it a little persuation from the left hand side. It popped right out but I never found the spring. Installation was a snap compared what everyone told me. I just lined it up and it popped right in first try.

maybe the reason why it was hard to remove and that you didnt find a spring was because it was glued on??

I've never had trouble removing my rear view mirror. Replacing them back would take about less than a couple of minutes too. Just place one pin inside the bracket.. and hit the other side with my palm (i've got small hands so it is easier to hit it without hitting the mirror or anything else)

The spring was in there, I heard it bounce off of the dash and don't know where it landed.

And of course you know, that spring will stay in hiding until it knows it is not needed any longer...

After bouncing off the dash it promptly dida double pirouette in midair as it lined up and plopped down the defrost duct, where it will mosey around for awhile as it makes its way into the blower squirrelcage where it will annoy the driver to no end with the clattering.....Thats just how Murphy works...believe me...I know him too well.

Good timing . I have a cracked frame on my origianl rv mirror & whlle I was at the U PULL IT last weekend pulling out a new T-bar from a 240D sunroof frame, to replace my crooked one, there was a like new one off a 300D sitting on the seat next to me.

So now as soon as I get my ol D back from the shop I will do the deed.

Last few days she is FINALLY getting a complete A/C overhaul.

I was down there yesterday & got to see what a 300D looks like with the dash completely removed. Not a sight for the faint of heart....

I will report back hopefully Monday nite with the complete list of the many new parts installed.

Any way to fix a mirror?

My mirror on my 124 is loose. Any way to tighten it up, or to otherwise fix it?

If it's the same as the 123's there are 3 screws that attach the bracket to the roof. I made sure they were tight before I installed the new mirror.

No, I meant mine is loose at the ball swivel on the mirror. Any way to tighten the grip the plastic has around the metal ball?
