Also tried what you said. There is a resistance as I push the button with the key removed. What could this mean? Thanks

Try the same operation I described earlier with the driver door locked, and with the driver door unlocked, using the key. I think you might be able to jog the mechanism by using the master door lock to reset the vacuum system alignment. You might try cycling the locks several times, with the trunk lock set in the independent position, and the position with the trunk lock under the control of the vacuum system.
I went outside in 20F weather just now to check the 1986 190E 2.3-16 and the 1988 300E. Both cars have a key slot that, when left in its vertical position, the key can be withdrawn, and the trunk locks and unlocks with the driver door. If the key is turned to the horizontal position in the clockwise direction, the key can also be removed, but in this position the trunk remains locked even when the doors are unlocked by inserting the key in the driver's door and unlocking the car. If the key is turned to the horizontal position in the counter clockwise direction, the trunk can be openned by pushing in on the button. I was unable to turn the key to the unlock position with the key inserted in the lock while the button was also fully depressed (pushed in). The key cannot be withdrawn in the horizontal position with the key turned all the way counter clockwise. So, I know of no "trick" to get into the car's trunk outside the factory intended means. I think something in your lock has been allowed to get out of position, rendering the expected "fail safe" mechanical locking mode, well, failed. About the only way I can think of affecting a vacuum system failure like this is to try to exercise the vacuum system enough to get some action on the mechanisms at your trunk lock. It may be futile. I am also not sure how, but I believe there is a means, to open the trunk from inside. I do not believe there is free access to the trunk from inside the car though. There may be access for an arm and a tool, by removing the rear seat back. Sorry, I have no other avenues to offer. Good luck, Jim

[quote=82300sd;1413126]Hi Jim,
Can the lock be accessed if you remove the back seat. I don't think so, at least not on a 123. Firewall. Can't help otherwise, sorry. Good luck.

I no longer have a W126 to check, but I think the access from the back seat would be mostly blocked by structure, and possibly the fuel tank - don't recall if the tank on a W126 chassis is propped up behind the rear seat or hanging under the trunk. In any case if there is access it is likely only through some small access ports, and the distance to the trunk lock is longer than a human arm, unless you are an NBA basketball player. Sorry, Jim

Fixed!
1. Mechanic accessed the trunk via the store box behind rear seats.
2. Removed the tail light with some welded to extend tools to gain nearer access to the lock. 3. Cause of the malfunction was a removed lock nut with the mechanism. Just re-inserted the lock nut. 4. Trunk is now open and lock back to normal function. Thanks to all who gave their suggestions specially truckinik . Spent $8 ($4 tip included)to have it repaired.

Cool. I was going to say, when I had to get into a 240D to take the trunk lid, I busted out the taillight, reached in, pulled off the cover to the mechanism, and yanked on it to release.
