Considering a '79 240D, automatic, 178K on the odometer. What would you W123 veterans carry in an onboard spares kit? TIA, Jay

Both fuel filters, a set of sockets, and one of those bright red triangles that denote slow-moving 240D's...

Just kidding. These are good cars.

filters like the gentleman before me said ,and I replaced
all the belts and hoses on my 81 Sd when I brought it home, they are all avaible on fast lane at very good prices.Sure would be a shame to overheat that nice engine because of a blown heater hose, also a good time to replace the thermostat and proper anti freeze. I still carry all sorts of unessary stuff plus enough tools to start a service shop in my trunk....can't ever tell what you might need plus might be able to help a stranded MB owner sometime. "look here I just happen to have a starter for your 190 Sl in here somewhere"....

A spare transmission. You would be better served buying a 240D with a manual transmission.

Good luck,

Larry, when I lived back East I had a friend from the West come visit me one summer in an aging V.W. van .He carried a spare engine with him and had to install it before his return trip.......you sure are right about a manual in a 240
D I do a lot or rowing in my old 74 can't imagine what the power loss would be like with an auto tranny....

I used to carry a short jumper wire with alligator clips on each end, in order to bypass the occasional burned out glow plug. An extra cap for the last injector is also a good thing to have.
