Narrowing down the list (cold weather thread)

OK,

As many of you have no doubt read, I can't start my 617 to beat the devil when it gets very cold. plugged in, good fuel or whatever, it won't start.

here's what I've been able to rule out.

Glowplugs: Check
Synthetic oil: Check
Good Battery: Check
Good starter: Check
New fuel filters: Check
New Oil filter (duh): Check
Block heater(s): Check
Good, clean, treated fuel: Check

That leaves, mis-adjusted valves, low compression. right?
Now, it's forcast to be -30 overnight and tomorrow morning. I'm leavild the car UNPLUGGED if it won't start after a 25 second glow, I'll plug it in for an hour. if it doesn't start after that hour, then I will have to re-verify my valve adjustment and injection timing.

Lightbulb And

an air leak in the fuel system at sub zero ambient.

If your engine compartment rubber hoses are over three years old, I would replace them.

If the primer pump leaks when used replace it.

Have a great day.

Hmmm...that's very interesting, I was wondering about that while I had the filter in my hands. there is a rather large bubble in the primary filter when the engine is idling. it's about the length of the filter, but it doesn't really seem excessively aerated...primer pump is in good shape and the handle is tight.

with air bleeding into the system overnight (if it is infact) then the IP is losing it's prime...right? and when I start it in the morning it's essentially re-priming the system and killing all my juice before I get a chance to get it primed enough to start or at least cough....interesting....well, I guess this weekend is as good a time as any.....Viton hoses??

You are really pushing it to expect a start at -30 tomorrow morning without a block heater. I doubt if the compression in an older average example will allow it. Thats somewhere near your engines possible capability when it was new with maximum compression I think. On the otherhand you may have like new compression. I live in the same country and their have been no cases of sunstroke reported in the last two weeks locally either.

Brrr... in addition to plugging in, hook up a GOOD battery charger.
is there anyplace warm for you to work on this? it must be hard working on all this with gloves on... surely at those temps you aint doing this with bare hands... anyway, I would crack each injector line while someone is cranking it, and verify no bubbles are escaping. once that is past, pull each injector/glow plug, and verify compression. as long as all 5 are over 280psi, you should be able to start. if not, you may need to hook all the injectors up, and verify they are spraying. when you pull out the injectors, look the pc's over for signs of pressure escaping, carbon trails, heat shields damaged, etc.
personally, I would climb into a warm bead, and wait for warmer weather...
I said it before, and I'll say it again,
BRRR.

I wouldn't bother with vitons. I pulled my hoses off to switch to viton about a year ago. I had 1 years, and 8k miles worth of mostly B100 use on the lines. They were fine. I cut them open and looked at the entire length of the hoses. There were no signs of degredation. So if I were to do it again, I would just put some good quality hoses on in replacement. They are a lot cheaper.

Most of the simple stuff. Now adjust the valves and check the timing. Your timing is probably off.

After that if you are still having problems do a compression and leak down test.
