flex disk removal

I've looked, but haven't seen any info on specifically removing flex disks. Is it as simple as undoing the bolts and dropping the driveshaft, or will I be running into something else?

1980 300sd turbo, w116.

Thanks.

If the W116 shaft is the same as the W123, you might have to loosen the crimping nut and push the shaft forwards. It is a fairly large nut that tightens the rear half of the driveshaft to the front half. 2 channel lock pliers should do.

In the center of the driveshaft there is a part that goes about 1" into the flex joint.

Just make sure you mark the driveshaft connections so that it goes back exactly as it came off.

Check the condition of the hanger bearing support rubber while you have the drive shaft out. They crack and rip from age.

Have a good pry bar handy. The discs are sometimes stuck to the flanges of the trans/differential.

no, the slip joint in the center of the drive shaft, mark both sides so that you can reassemble exactly the same way.

^^ meaning DO NOT "clock" the parts. re-assemble them relative to each other. mark the shaft at dead bottom-ie; 6oclock, and the rear flange at dead bottom, ie; 6 oclock. reassemble the same way. other wise you will likely develope a vibration.

can someone explain how not reassembling the driveshafts as they were, could cause a vibration? my car came with new flex discs installed and a driveshaft in the trunk. i didnt notice it when i bought it, or else i would have asked, but im wondering if someone replaced something under there and thats why i have a spare shaft now. i ask this because i get a vibration at all speeds. start to feel it around 30+. it feels more engine based than rotational/drivetrain, since it will actually increase with throttle, even before the car accelerates from that increase in throttle. i'd like to rule out things before i change engine mounts and engine shock.

it sounds like you did isolate things pretty well with your description. I would start with the engine shocks and see if it makes a difference. if it improves, but not eliminates, then go in for the mounts.
