I have over 210K miles on my 1991 300D 45k of those I have put on it. All I have changed is the battery and alternator plus a mobil1 15W-50 service with MB filter every 4-5000 miles.
I also own a 1995-5 E300D 24 valve with just over 100K on the clock, although I do suspect it has done more. All it needed was a bit of TLC which it is getting, I plus the Indy mechanic have no reason to doubt it will also put 200k on the clock if it is looked after. The difference between the two is smoothness and speed. The 24 valver is a little louder (love it) but doesn't seem as cumbersome. I would have no qualms about jumping in either of the two and driving across Europe The old MB mechanic told me something interesting about MB diesels: up to about 1997 MBs were built with a body life expectancy of ca 20 years. From 1997 onwards, 10 years was the acceptable norm for the body. The earlier engines should last you for life The older cars pre 97 were built to go anywhere in the world with no drastic modifications be it Saudi Arabia or Alaska. Nowadays that just isn't the case If you want gadgets and electronics coming out of the yingyang that is your choice, but if you want elegance with a touch of class mixed with reassuring reliability which is aged like a fine cognac, which brings a tear to the eye of every traditionalist who long for the days when quality meant something.......................Sorry well it is Vatantines day |
