Problems removing rear axle assembly.

Hello All :)

The driver side, rear, inner CV joint went on my 81 300D :(

I pulled an axle assembly from a junkyard car.

Man was it hard.

The differential cover came right off.
I got the c clip thing removed from the axle.
And the bolt removed from the wheel side of the assembly.
I even removed the nut that holds the shock on the top.

But I could not get enough room to easily slide out either end of the axle assembly.

I finally had to beat the heck out of the hub to get the rear suspension to
go down far enough to let the axle slide out of the hub and differential.

What the heck did I do wrong ??? :confused:

I hope putting this sucker back in my car is not as hard !!

well, when I did my rear end work i could pull the axel from the hub just by jacking the car up and letting the suspension down all the way. without messing with the shock mounts.

did you support the rear at the original height? If you removed the bracket holding the pumpkin in place it will drop making it impossible to remove the axle.

This is how I have done it.

Yep, Support the car with jack stands just under the main bolt that holds the big suspension bushing, place a floor jack under the pumpkin. Remove the rear tires and calipers. Your allready familiar with removing the plate on the differential and the clips.

Please make sure you don't lift the car off the stands with the floor jack. The stands are stabilizing the car. And always chock the front tires on both sides.

Remove the 13mm bolt in the center of the hub. Start with the hub end of the shaft. Pull it out of the hub. If it won't pull out, drive it out with a ( I think) 3/16" rod. (At this point, raising the differential will help alot.) Something strong enough to hammer on, not too big to ruin the internal threads on the shaft. Once out, pull towards the back of the car past the hub, then you can pull out the other end.

Not the hub.

I thought I was following the steps someone put in a how-to around here.
But I could easily be mistaken.

I also removed the mount that held the differential.
Then raised the differential with a jack.

Is it better to leave the differential mount connected ?

what I did was lift the differential and hand tighten 2 of
the mounting bolts. the lowered the jack and got it out of the way till I finished manuvering the axle out

No. Because you would have to remove it in order to get to the "C" clips to uninstall or install. Just keep a jack under it to support it.
