Is there a battery in the controller. I have a 96 that it never works. I never checked for a battery though. Maybe I will.

On our 97 E320 the door opener battery died, we called MB roadside for help to open doors. If this happens to you the doors can be opened by inserting the key in the trunk lock, turn it and all doors open.
Do not forget to change the little battery.

You don't have to insert your key in the trunk lock to open the doors in case your remote dies. You can insert it directly into one of the doors and unlock it as if there was no remote. Keep in mind that these are infrared remotes which means that a direct line of sight must be present between the remote and the receiver on the rear-view mirror for the remote to work. There is a battery in these remotes which does need to be changed every now and then.

There are two button cells inside the remote (I'm assuming the '97 has the infrared-style key which doens't require the key blade to start).

Just take the blade completely out of the fob, and use it to pry up the little tab inside where the blade goes. The tab is right under the button used to remove the blade. It should pull up the back of the remote, including the panic button. I've found the remote eats up batteries; it works pretty well with new ones but soon requires me to be with about 10 feet of the car.
