VIN to engine number cross reference does it exist?

Assuming that the engine has not been swapped, is it possible to determine the engine number (not the type like OM 603, but the specific engine number) from the Vehicle ID Number? This is for a 1987 300d - the 124 body.

I would guess that MB must have (or once had ) a list like that. Has any one ever heard of a way to access this info?

Run the vin number through the Russian MB Club site. Do a search for it here. It will tell you all kinds of goodies like engine and transmission number, interior and exterior color and all options including the option numbers. It is a great tool when you are looking at a car for sale.
