engine knock 2.5 190D

Greetings All,

I haven's seen the car yet, but the owner says it has a knock in the upper part of the engine, #4 cylinder area. He says it starts up and runs good, but has a knock or tap.

Any ideas. If it is in the upper part, what might it be? I thought the bad knocks would be in the lower part, rods and such.

Thanks,

Wayne

Wayne, I've talked to that guy and the one who had the car previously
FWIW that car has been on craigslist for 6mos by 2 diff people. That should tell you enough. Upper end is valves maybe? Who knows. If you want I can go take a looksies at it. Maybe the guy will let me do a compression test. Did you have or buy that 617 eng/tranny what was going for $400?

[edit] also there is a 190d down at conley pull a part. not sure if 2.2 or 2.5 but its NON turbo.

If it's up top it could be a bad hydraulic lash adjuster or a bad injector. Checking the injectors is easy. Loosen each injector line one by one and see if the noise goes away. Of course at that point the price of the car could go up.

Lower end knocking usually gets worse under load. Put the transmission in D and load the engine against the brakes for a couple of seconds. If the knock gets louder, offer no more than $500 for the car if the body is in good shape. Don't load the engine for more than a couple of seconds at a time with a few minutes rest in between or you'll fry the ATF.
