Will a 300d alternator fit a 240d?

The 240d my son is driving is not charging the battery. I'm going to drive to Columbus tomorrow to help him out. I have an extra alternator off of a 617. Are there any differences? FWIW he already tried replacing the battery.

I am pretty sure they are the same, or at least bolt up. i think the 240 has a 55 amp and the 300 has a 65 amp, but the are the same body.

You have the double-belt vs. single-belt issue if the alternator is from a turbo engine. I am not absolutely sure, but I expect this means the one belt on a 240D will not ride properly in either of the two pulleys on a 300D alternator. The alignment will probably be off, and I think they use different belt sizes.

you should be able to change the pulleys out.

the single pulley is what you want on a 240.

btw the douple pulleys take a slightly narrower belt than the single pulleys and if you put in the narrow belt it will slip. this was a real source of aggrivation because we didn't know it and had a charging problem that we couldn't solve for a couple of years.

my indie would order belts for my na 300d motor from the book for an 83 300d (which was turbo and the double belt system) and on the single pulley system of the na 300 it was too narrow.

alternator swap

Thanks everyone. Hopefully I'll be able to swap the pulleys.

mobetta 02-20-2007 12:55 PM

If you cant switch pulley's yourself, take it into a locally owned repair shop- most of those places feel bad even charging for something so quick and simple, but it may cost$5-$10.

Yes they well swap out. The pullys must be swaped unless you convert the 240D to the 2 belt setup. If you have a parts car (3.0 turbo) consider doing this. If the alternator belt on the 240D breaks or comes off the car will overheat. The single alternator belt runs the waterpump. In the 300D it is a dual belt setup.
Removing the pulley requires a impact wrench. O'reallys will do it for free I think.

dmorrison, have you actually swapped all that out?

i ask because it is a desirable upgrade but i am not sure it can be done. i am pretty sure i have checked that out and found it not feasible.

OK: I do know that the 300TD alternator will fit the 240D. My daughters 240D has a 300D alternator. The Bosch case is the same, just different internals. 55amps vs. 65 amps

Now swapping the pulleys. I have not done this, I would like to do this on my daughters car for peace of mine. Her alternator belt did break and she was stranded by the side of the road due to the water pump stopping and her car overheating.
Here is my logic, correct me if I am wrong.
The water pump for both cars is the same, so the belt positions should be the same with the only difference being the second belt added to the pulley forward of the 240D's original belt.
The alternator is the same for both cars so the difference is again the second belt added forward of the original belt.
The 240D crankshaft pulley assembly is not a engine specific, that is "balanced" to the crankshaft like the crankshaft balancer. So the pulley unit mounts the same and is identical to the 300D pulley except for the second belt on the alternator. And the 240D crank pulley has a blank space were the alternator second belt would be located, just forward of the original alternator. So I assume that if you bought the following items.

A 2 belt alternator pulley.
A 2 belt alternator crankshaft pulley.
A 2 belt water pump pulley.
An additional alternator belt

Then the setup should work.

I may be wrong but it seems that after reviewing the pictures I have of both engines and the parts catalog. This swap should work.

Please if anyone has at attempted it and found that it can't be done. Speak now or forever hold your peace.

Dave

PS: Anyone who has a 300D turbo crank pulley, water pump pulley and alternator pulley who would like to sell it to me, I will attempt this swap and post the results with a pictorial. Please contact me with a price.

or carry a pair of nylons in the tool kit to use as an emergency belt. they could hold your pants up, too!

It is not proper etiquette to wear pants with nylons.:D :D

your note reminded me. the nose on the crank on the turob motor is at least longer than the na engine. maybe a larger diameter too but i cannot remember. this may or may not matter. but i do think we looked at it and i know we never did the conversion. if it were feasilble i believe we would have done it. i probably have the 300 parts though. i will look.
