What's wrong with the engine?

Does it come with the engine?

Check www.metricmotors.com for prices, but I hear it's around $9000 for a long block. MB pricing is competitive if you factor in the 4 year warranty.

EDIT Make that www.mercedesengines.net

Cheap alternative is to find a 3.0 engine out of an 86-87 300SDL or 87 300D/TD. You have some decisions to make regarding which cylinder head to use.

Short answer, unless you plan to do all the work yourself and your time isn't better spent doing something else, buy a car in tip top shape with records to prove it.

93 300SD 3.0 <-- definitely not the cheap way to have a W140 Diesel

Regarding a rebuilt motor, I replaced mine on the 350 sdl. I would strongly
suggest that you buy it from Mercedes. They have a rebuild shop in Berlin
and do a very nice job. Several years ago I paid $ 5800. You get a 48 month guarantee/or 50,000 miles. The prices have gone up since then several times.
