240D muffler removal a good idea?
is it ok to remove and replace the muffler with a pipe on a 81 240D?

It will get louder, is that ok? Turbo diesels are different, because the turbo acts as a noise dampener. My car is no louder without the muffler.

Quick answer is no. Way too loud, like NASCAR. You can remove resonator(keep muffler), like I did. Runs just a bit louder than normal this way.

You could keep the resonator and install a cherry bomb. It will act like a muffler for a while then as it packs with soot it will become a straight pipe but still be legal under the law.

My suggestion is to do what I plan on doing. Cutting open the muffler and cutting/pulling out the baffles.

the reason i was asking is the outlet on the muffler got ripped off and instead of buying a new muffler to replace it, just make the exhaust strait to the resonator in the rear with no muffler.

You probably wont like how loud it will get. But you may for a few days.

removed the center resonator when the center pipe broke from sag.
sounds good now.. better throttle response seemingly, though throaty. |

its not that bad right now its coming strait out of the center muffler there is no pipe between the muffler and resonator.

The resonator does a hell of a lot to keep things quiet. When I put my glass pack on I fired it up just to see what it sounded like with out a muffler. I was astonished how quiet it was.
