Different Cams?
Marked 00, 05, 08 from what I gathered in the valv adj documentation. Whats the difference between them (other than materials). More importantly, what do I want for hp gain?

A V8 gas car.
Changing the cam on a 617 diesel is not going gain much if anything. edit: I do remember sometime back here mention of head work, an "05" cam advanced just a bit and tweeking the IP yielding good performance and mileage. I did a search but came up nil... If I remember it was in a W116 chassis. Who was that??? |

Both of your cars already have the later camshaft. The later camshaft was added in 1980 300SDs to increase the HP by 13 or so (my '79 has 110, I think you have 123ish?).
This document has a lot of info on the different cams, their valve timing, duration, etc. Comes from the MB engine manual. http://www.ece.msstate.edu/~jer99/mercedes/05-220.pdf HTH!!

Search for the name "Doktor Bert". He's done lots of interesting things to his W116. I bet that's who you're thinking of. Lots of good threads.
