What do I need to turn the crank for valve timing etc

I have a bump starter now but of course that doesnt allow for minor turns. Do I really need to remove the radiator to turn the eng at the crank? What's the secret?

26mm socket

I *think* it's a 26mm socket on the crank (I'm at work right now - can't check)

since you are going to be turning the engine from the top so you can watch cam position, it probably would be worth removing the fan - remember to keep one bolt in place so the pully doesn't come off under tension of the belt (just loosen the last bolt enough to wiggle the fan off - then put another bolt back in for safe measure)

you can turn the crank from the bottom - grabbing the handle of your ratchet under the bumper and not have to remove the fan - you'll just be popping up and down a lot

Actually it's 27MM.

And no, you don't have to remove the radiator. Just turn the crank from the bottom and the clutch fan will not go anywhere because of the ratchet being there.

I believe its 27mm, When I tried previously I seem to remember not having enough clearance with my 1/2" socket wrench and 27mm socket. Removing the fan its a real PITA as far as I am concerned.

If you're going to have to buy a socket for the job, consider buying the Hazet Fuel INjector socket. It will get the job done on the crank bolt and then you will ALSO have socket for the injectors.

Good luck,

On the four speed, put it in fourth, jack up a rear wheel and turn that. That's what I do now, but I've also used the "bump the starter" method from under the hood and it worked too. There is a fair amount of leeway on the base circles to get the valves in the right position. To me the crank bolt is too much of a PIA. Not only that, but I once left my ratchet on it when I started the car.
