About using wd-40
 

I think i have the same a problem as in a previous thread. This is the first diesel mb i have had and am still learning. The question i have is i think i am having the same problem as a previous poster has, now were do i use wd-40 to get the thing started. I have a 1990 350SDL.

You shouldn't need anything to help a 603 start. Fix the problem, what are the symptoms?

Chances are you probably need glow plugs.

When the glo plugs on my 617 went south about Christmas time, I did a little experimenting with both starting fluid and wd 40. Starting fluid without the glo plugs will work. It does sound disasterous. It sounds like that engine is coming apart right now. If you like your engine, stay away from starting fluid. WD 40 sp4rayed in while cranking did not get it to fire up. Even well warmed with the block heater, it was a no start. It did lube the cylinders and cranking speed increase, but no starting.

the chevy dealers around here used to use wd-40 to start diesels after a fuel
filter change.

That does not mean it's the right thing to do.

Another reason that they are dumb. After seeing some of the crap the GM dealer my friend takes his 2500 to I wouldn't trust them. They can't even install the plastic guard on the top of the tailgate without it rattling around. How freaken hard is that? Oh he marks and checks the oil filter before they service it to, they didn't like changing those...:rolleyes:

If it crackles like it's going to explode, you've simply used too much.


I put a tractor (as in farm tractor) ether injector on my S15, and it gives small measured amounts of ether to assist starting. Often, it will start as though it was already warm, without crackling. If I jab the button a few times, I can certainly over-do it and make it sound terrible.


I've seen people spraying ether in the intake like they were spray-painting something. Yikes!
