Turbo at junkyard looked stock install but much bigger than most turbo 300ds

The car is a 300d turbo ,1985 .It had the name air technologies ,which is a brand from Honeywell Corp.,Garret turbos is now what its company stamp is.This looks like it was made for the car,it is higher up on the side of the engine and noticeable bigger. The air cleaner we recognize on these 300d s is exchanged for a round air box on the passenger side ,near the headlight, again ,totally stock looking. Was this an optional unit from the factory ? I wonder what the output of this great looking piece of engineering could be.

Probably a cali version car.

diametricalbenz 02-28-2007 05:39 PM

Did it have a catalyst on it?

chasinthesun 02-28-2007 05:57 PM

Yes ,this is sounding like the california car everone hates ,the air cleaner is some $70 .ouch.Whats up with the bigger turbo?

bgkast 02-28-2007 05:59 PM

AFAIK it is the same as the other Garret turbos. Maybe it has been upgraded?

Its a Cali car being described.

The turbo being up higher and the ARV on the compressor make it look bigger. Its a TAO314. It has the same guts as a TAO301 but has a weaker waste gate spring.

As far as I know, I'm the only one to upgrade the compressor and have it bolt up to the stock manifold. Also it looks exactly the same size as before. Search for Franken turbo for more info.

Since my bearings are going out I may rebuild and modify the TBO360 I got the compressor housing from and put that on my OM617.

The 85 cars had a larger turbo. My friend has confirmed this. It probably has the ARV as well for the 85 model year.

It's still a 45 trim T3. No fundamental difference between an 82 and 85 Garrett.

I confirm this as I have taken mine apart.

in 86 they went to a 50 trim compressor

Turbo Pic

This is the BIGGER turbo that the w123 85 300D have... I believe it's KKK and not Garrett.

That would be the KKK. It's actually smaller and less efficient.

It spools faster but tops out around 13psi before becoming an exhaust restriction.

ConnClark 03-01-2007 11:34 AM

Garrett turbos are the basically the same. KKK turbos I know nothing about. I was led to believe this was a garrett being discussed.

I'm still thinking on going to the KKK for quicker out of the hole.
