Thanks for the offer, that sounds like a good price. I live in Sacramento, CA so I'll have to pass. Shipping would probably cost what I could buy one locally for. Actually, I have a line on another car with a lot of electrical, body, brake and other problems but with a good running motor that I could get for under $500 if it is still available.

I think I will charge the battery, do a compression test and then proceed from there. I am pretty sure I will end up removing the head and then checking the head components and cylinder walls for damage, and see what I find. I will definitely change the thermostat regardless(cheap insurance) and maybe glow plugs as well. If every thing goes well I could end up with a running 240D for about $1k. If not, oh well! I am not afraid of taking a little risk, which is why I am buying the car. I have had a few times when I have gotten burned with this kind of thing but the positive outcomes have been much more numerous. I have even gotten some "smokin deals"(pun intended).

I am new to Mercedes and especially diesels but the learning curve has been fun. This board has been very helpfull and I appreciate all of the advice. Hopefully I will get to the point at some time that I can contribute something as well.

Thanks again

I assume you are asking about the engine from the second car, not the one with the bown head gasket. That one looks complete, and it idled very smoothly when I went to look at it. I did not drive it as the brakes were so bad I could barely stop the car when I attempted backing out of the dirveway. I also noticed that the engine was already warm when I got there so I do not know how it would start cold. The electrical system was pretty messed up and the guy had to plug and unplug the glow plug lead from the solenoid to prevent it from draining the battery.

I am renting a tow dolly and am going to go pick them both up tomorrow. I will keep the board posted in regard my progress. Will probably be asking for help along the way too.

Thanks
