240D engine into a 220D

OK guys, I'm sure that this subject has come up in the past, but I searched and couldn't find it.

I'm considering purchasing a 1981 240D that has body damage and swapping the engine into my 1969 220D. Does anybody have experience with this swap?

What problems could I anticipate?
Will I have too much power for the 220D transmission?

The oil filter housing and steering box may try to occupy the same space and cause trouble. You may have to use a remote mount filter.

If things go well, I will have a running OM616.916 engine (from my W115 240D) which will drop right in available in Torrance as soon as my conversion happens. You'll want to rebuild it though.

did they have the top load oil filter in 81? if not then it should work pretty well in the 220.

if it has the top loading oil filter i would not put it in the 220. too many differences, imho.

some of those things though may be able to be swapped over to the older locations off the 220 motor.

'81 is a W123 so it should have a top load filter.

An 81 would have the top filter. I think only the 1977-78 cars have the York A/C compressor.

My Oct 78 and later 79 240Ds both had the top loader.
