Common oil leaks and fixes
 

What are the common oil leaks on a 617 turbo? How do you fix them permanently?

Make sure you check the plugs in the front of the block. I think there are 2 or 3. On my 300D, these guys needed to be tightened up. Of course, the whole front of the engine had a cake of oil on it so it was hard to find where the oil was coming from.

I recommend gunking down the engine several times until it is perfectly clean. Then drive it awhile and get in there and look it over. I worked oil leaks for weeks but now have a car that doesn't leak a drop.

OH, and don't forget, the most nasty and wasteful oil leak is the 3kmiles oil change.:D

All seals leak, its just a matter of of whats acceptable.
As the cars are getting older and older all the seals are going to get old and develop problems. Some are more common than others.
Valve cover gaskets, should be replaced with each valve adjustment. 15,000mi or once a year.
Oil pan gasket at times.
Turbo oil return gaskets. Number 1 on the list
Oil separator return orings.
Oil cooler lines.
Sometimes the front crank oil seal.

Another one is the Filter housing to Engine block gasket. They get harden and will leak.

I think mmy filter housing to block gasket is leaking, because oil looks like its leaking from around the IP. How hard is the housing to block gasket to change?

Well I thought it was a breeze. Of course, I had the engine out and on a stand at the time:D . From what I gather, its a bit tight but definitely do-able. Make sure you get the block and housing surgically clean before reassembly or you're just asking for a leak. There is also a gasket at the front of the ip where it meets the block. It could be leaking from there as well.

Instead of just changing the oil housing gasket, try tightening the bolts first.
