1984 300 turbo diesel
My car idles about 400 rpm less when the engine is cold compared to when it is warm. It did not use to be that much different but now it is and when you adjust the idle with the engine is warm then when it is cold it is way to low and engine virbrates the air filter housing to much. What causes this would a new syle rack damper bolt cure this problem ?

The governor inside the injection pump is likely not doing the job. When operating correctly, the flyweights will move outward and control the idle rpm to a very tight tolerance.
When cold, the SD can be heard to creep up slightly in rpm and then fall slightly as the governor pulls the rack back to hold engine speed. The rack damper bolt probably won't affect this issue, but, I'd be curious to see if it's too tight. Back it off by one turn and see if it makes a difference. |

If the rack damper bolt it too tight, the car does not idle well when cold. That is a common symptom, so Brian is having this checked out first.
