why won't the REAR DOOR of my 300TD OPEN?

hey y'all-
the rear door (hatch) of my wagon isn't operable, as there's something wrong with the button / latch mechanism. the only way i can get it to open is to crawl inside the car, reach inside the door (i've got the cover off, and the emergency lever is missing), and move the latch mechanism by hand.
it's NOT the lock/vacuum actuator mechanism...it's something in the linkage that the button contacts. there's got to be something out of adjustment, or a piece missing in there, but even after consulting what diagrams of the assembly i could find online, i've been unable to determine what's wrong.
could anybody consult the attached photos and compare them to the inside of their wagon or a parts diagram and let me know what i'm missing? would really be appreciated!

(check out the ATTACHED PHOTOS..one shot's from the the driver's side, and one from the passenger side. i took the lock vacuum actuator out for the purposes of the photo...)

Is it possible to operate the mechanism with the door already open, so see if something either came apart or broke?

mechanism won't operate even with door open. from what i can tell, the button pushes in, but doesn't contact the "strike", as the strike isn't in the correct position. maybe there's some kind of spring missing that keeps the strike pulled towards the button? i'm not sure...can't really tell, as i don't have anything to compare it to, you know?

No, I do not, as I have the sedan. Can you move the lock mechanism with the key? I can't, cause I have an aftermarket key made from the "valet" or "service" key.

Also, check the vacuum actuator, if equipped.

Might be a stupid question, but is it locked? Turn the key in the lock 1/4turn and remove the key.

Gimme Some Credit :)

yeah, um, it's not just locked.
it has never worked, since i've owned the car. can look inside the door (where i took the photos) and see the key effecting movement on the cylinder/button, but when it's pushed in (in any position) it will not contact the strike. you can move the strike by hand, and affect unlocking, but it WILL NOT move back towards the cylinder, or re-engage.
does anybody have a wagon they could compare the photos to?

Credit given, it does sound like it's in the locked position, that's all.

No photos here, sorry.

I agree, it sounds as if it is still locked.
Can you see anything happening when you pull the door lock up and down?

Lock slot vertical is unlocked, horizontal is locked isn't it? Maybe someone had it apart and indexed the lock wrong so that it won't turn to the unlock position?

It does sound like it is locked. How much resistance do you get when you pull the knob. My vacuum actuator provides quite a bit of resistance. I'm working from memory here - the actuator rods (item 68) are they flopping aound loose or are they attached to a pivot point via a small plastic bushing? When I changed my latch assembly I vaguely remember having to "click" the rods into place so it would lock and unlock at least from the inside. I have the old assembly and rods somewhere - unfortunately it's such a safe place I can't find them right now. If and when I find them I should be able to remember the set up better. Hope this helps.

On my 85, key is vertical when locked. I turn it counterclockwise to unlock.

Ok, lets put it another way. It seems to be unlocked but it isn't. Whatever moves when the lock button goes up, causes the outside pushbutton to engage the unlocking mechanism. This is not happening.

Well I took pictures but vtech's are much better, I couldn't jam my camera in there as well.
I've got a pic looking in through the hole in the outside of the door where the button pushes in (my button is removed on my spare hatch)
If you think that might help you I can email it to you...I can't get the friggin pic down to 64 kB to post it here and I can't remember my flickr password right now.
If your mechanism seems to be screwed up I may be able to get this one removed from the door for you. I may need some guidance
