ok, search didn't help, how to fix sunroof on 82 SD?
well spring is here, and I wanna use the sunroof in my 82 SD. how do I go about getting it to open?
the dash switch just dims the lights. the manual crank in the trunk shattered... it would not turn. I was thinking about removing the motor, and such and trying to rotate the cable manually, but have never gotten into such a thing before. what steps should I take? is there a DIY link on here somewhere? my 83 parts car sunroof works great, so I will most likely end up swapping parts once I get it open. it does leak, the seal does not go all the way around, so I will rebuild the seals once I get it open too. help me help me! thanks John

I know little about sunroofs on this model. Generally though I have seen many that are very slow or that will not complete closure without a hand.
I think you could remove the motor. Check that it is not shorted by operating it plus lubricate it as well. Get the cable out of the housing and figure out how to get some solvent soaked device through it to clean the old grease out. Simular treatment for the rails and guides. Clean the cable itself as well. Lubricate everything with the proper special lubricant or something simular if you can identify the special qualities. Should work when everything goes back together in most cases I suspect. The old grease just becomes stickey or hard I imagine. Others will post actual information from experience. Two of mine are waiting for this treatment but still semi usable. |

Have you checked to make sure the PO didn't put sealant around the opening? Also have you tried helping the sunroof open by giving it a hand?
Once you get it open a little, you can remove the headliner to access the guts. I sprayed WD40 or PB plaster in the opening where the cable comes out. Had to do this several times, being careful not to get the solvent on the seats. When you get enough of the penetrant into the cable, it'll pour out the back of the sunroof cable by the motor. If you want, after disconnecting the cable from the sunroof, if you push the button to close the sunroof, the cable will be ejected from the opening by the sunroof, just pull the cable. But the whole trick is to get the sunroof to open a bit. As far as it leaking, the sunroofs were designed to leak, but to leak through the rubber down spouts at the 4 corners. The weatherstripping you see is actually just to reduce noise (whistling) while driving. Make sure your downspouts aren't clogged. good luck Marty

http://**************.com/node/270 Most of the stuff in it you can get yourself (except maybe the apparently hard-to-get factory-spec white grease for the rails), but it was worth it to me for the really detailed instruction booklet it comes with. While doing the service, I also discovered that the main gear attached to the motor was stripped. I got a replacement motor at the salvage yard ($75), and now my roof works great! |

Marty, can the sunroof cable be fed in/out in a similar fashion to the antenna mast?
(First, I need to determine why one corner of the sunroof stays up, won't "unlatch", on trying to open. Everything in the FSM says to open the sunroof before any access for service???)

Mine works but is slow, especially when closing. I need to give this some attention this summer as well.

Wait wait wait!!!!
I thought my sun roof was fubar as well. Seriously though, pull the switch out and clean it. I feel so stupid for not doing this sooner! It is worth the 5 minutes to eliminate it from the chain of possible problems. In my case the little contacts were dirty and the switch dimmed the lights when pressed.

Pull the switch and clean it. I was able to recover the use of my sun roof by doing that. Edit: Where is the manual sun roof closer? Here's my thread. Looks like you posted in it too

Hey vstech, I was at the Charlotte Pull Apart 2 weeks ago and they had a pretty good chestnut colored 87 420SEL (?) (gasser) with great interior and an intact sunroof. There was also another pre 1985 W126 near it. I got the headlamps, cruise amp, and zebrano set, but it looked like the roof stuff was still there. It might pay to take a trip to look. ...FWIW

If the lites dim that would mean high load on circuit. Most likey not the swith but the motor itself or the work the motor is doing is pretty high.

Ditto. The problem is either excessive electrical, or more than likely mechanical high resistance - i.e. motor or mechanism.

Seriously though it is worth the 5 minutes to pull the little guy out and clean it up. I know the image sucks, but all of those little pins in my connector were jet black with some weird dirt on it. I scrubbed it off and the entire sun roof sprung back to life. Start with the easiest like this darned switch and work backwards. I still feel stupid for not checking it sooner.
