now my glove box won't stay closed...

82 300SD I JUST got the thing cleaned out...
made a nice inventory of the glove box got rid of what was not needed.
closed it up normally, now every bump the thing pops open.
the latch feels like it ls just flopping around.
before I take off the screws in the "cup holder" section, is there anything to watch out for? or should I just start opening it up and look for what is amiss?
John

I replaced my spring and metal catch, and it now holds tight beautifuly to the dash.

I made a slotted screwdriver with a strip of metal and a hacksaw.

That'll teach you to clean it out. I'd blame it on the "What's in your glovebox" thread.

Not that difficult, no tricks really. The spring is a straight wire, most likely it has fallen out. Go to a hardware store and buy a coil spring with a long straight section , cut it off and you're good to go. You should be able to see where the spring goes by looking at the ridges cast into the lock mechanism.

The "spring" I am refering to is a formed metal strip that fits into grooves inside the locking mechanism.

I found the replacement part on one of the regular sites along with the metal catch (the metal part in the door, not the box). I can look for the link when I get home.

The old parts didn't look all that worn, but I decided to give it a shot since the replacements were cheap. Now the glove box is like new.

Or, in case you're not too adventurous, you could order a "Glove Box Repair Kit" from **************.com.

Same thing happened to mine a year or so ago. Bought an entire new back of the glove box door piece for about $20. Part number is on it. What happens or at least what happened to mine is that there is a little snap ring that slips into a groove in a plastic post to hold the spring in place. The tip of the plastic post broke off thus letting the snap ring fall off and not allow it to hold the spring in position. At least that's how I remember it.

They work alright when all of the parts are new and working properly.

Here are the parts: http://www.performanceproducts4benz.com/ProductCatalog.aspx?f=search&term=glove+box&C=T
