Wipers won't turn off!

I've had this problem occasionally, but turning the wipers on and off a few times usually fixed it. This morning, my wipers wouldn't turn off at all, no matter how many times I cycled the switch. Currently, I have the wiper motor unplugged, but I need the wipers... What could cause this? Easy fix?

The culprit is likely to be the combination switch itself. They get old and the contacts get tired.......especially with regard to the brights.

I haven't heard of a condition where the switch remains on........permanently..........however.........so, some checking with a meter is probably in order.

I had a problem with my Left turn signal. I cleaned out the combo switch - it was filthy nasty with grey dust - and the blinker worked OK. for awhile. could be your switch needs to be cleaned, the dust I would imagine is conductive.

On my 1979 300TD wagon, I had the same problem. On the advice of an MB tech, I took out the wiper relay and banged it on my work bench. Put it back in and the problem was solved. That was several years ago. On the 123, the relay is located behind the instrument cluster; not sure on the 126.

That's also a possibility.

The relay for the interval wipe control is on the far right side of the fuse box. It's the first relay at the front of the box.

Hmmm I have the same problem with my 76 300D every now and then it gets "stuck" on I can still change the speed but not turn them off. eventually they turn off Sometimes I can turn off the engine and restart and it will stay off sometimes but usually it will "reset" and start going again on its own.

Where would I find this relay in a 76 300D and roughly what does it look like?

Thanks!

Brian,

By your quote above, assuming car is a 126, I'm standing infront of the car with fuse box open, is the relay the long black one or one of the aluminium cube relays? My wiper sometimes get stuck upright and takes a while to wipe...

Thanks

Brian,
I just walked to my car 1987 300SDL and opened the fuse box. There are assortment of relays packed in there. One is long and rectangular, other look like Klima, the rest are aluminium cubes. I am trying to locate which one is the wiper relay. Thanks

If you're facing the box from the left side, the fuse rows are on the left and the relays are on the right.

In the third row, there is one long relay by itself. That's the combination relay and it operates the wipers for the interval and for parking. If your problem is in the low speed or high speed modes, the relay is not involved. It's either the combination switch or the motor.

Thanks Brian,

The problem is with the low speed interval (first detent of the wiper/turn signal stalk combo). What do you mean by "combination switch"? Where is it located?
