Recommendation for junkyards near Philly

Anybody know of a good pick and pull yard in the Philly area (within 60 miles is fine). Just moved here so I'm at a bit of a loss. Looking for 115 240D parts, yeah it's a stretch...

Mister Byrnzoil 03-07-2007 07:43 PM

I haven't found any good yards in philly, I go down to crazy rays in jessup md, (about 2 hours south) they are crooks, but they have many w123s and the occaisional 115.

I can't understand your calling Crazy Rays, "crooks". Their price list is published on their website, so there should not be any surprises. You pick only the parts you want. What was the problem?

By the way, there are 4 Crazy Rays in the Balt. area.
1) Near Martin State Airport in Middle River--it uses Rays' price sheets but the name is more like " U Pull IT".
2) Erdmann Ave, 1 block east of US 40 about 3 miles inside the Balt Beltway.
3) In Curtiss Bay next to the Coast Guard Yard. 1 st exit south of the Francis Scott Key Bridge
4) Jessup, on RT 1 .

I use Erdman Ave and the Curtiss Bay lots the most. They are the cleanest. The Erdmann Ave lot has the quickest turnover. If you see a part you want, better grab it, because it might be off to the crusher tomorow. The Jessup lot is Large, but a lot of mud--there is a large stream running thru it--foreign cars are on the other side of the stream. Middle River always seems to have a lot of water, too.

MS FOWLER- Could you give me a better Idea where the Curtis Bay yard is? I live quite a ways south (StMarys County) but wifes family lives on Solley Rd. so I'm somewhat familiar with the area. Do they have much in the way of 123s?

Not really local but Potomac German Auto in Frederick MD (about 150 miles, 2.5hrs.). Here's the web site http://mbpartsonline.com/

you are right, the word crook is inaccurate, I have a love/hate relationship, the place has amazing cars, but EVERYTHING about it is so lackluster... muddy swamp conditions, Nasty portolets, nowhere to wash your greasy paws, not enough parking, poor removal of fluids from vehicles (freaking environmental nightmare), no engine lifts, cash only policy, no refunds policy, no testing of electric parts, no cameras allowed(?), no jacks allowed and some of the most horrible customer relations I've ever witnessed.

When I lived in denver, I guess I got spoiled buy the pull and save there, that place is everything CR isn't.

MS Fowler 03-08-2007 01:57 PM

Mister B,
I agree with the environmental conditions, especially at Jessup. You should try the Curtis Bay location; much cleaner--gravel everywhere. As for the
no pictures" policy. Yeah, right--just don't show them you have a camera.

Here is a link to their page:

The Yard in Middle River is not listed, but its not strictly a "Ray's " yard. Its just a U Pull it Yard that uses Ray's price list, but with Rays name removed. It is on Earl's road, about 1/4 mile north of Eastern Avenue, extended. If you have a Baltimore ADC map, its about at grid D1 on page Map 38.

Mister Byrnzoil 03-08-2007 03:38 PM

thanks for the info MS, I'd happily go to a different location for a better experience.

Thanks for the source, I'll check it out one of these days.

Sounds like a yard I used to use in upstate New York only they had these vicious geese that would attack without warning. You'd be yanking something out of a engine compartment and whammo they'd get you right on the backside.

Vicious geese? Are they related the the infamous "killer rabbit" that threatened Jimmy Carter?

jfields 03-09-2007 01:34 PM

Found out about another one...

I guess they have those "Junkyard Geese" I've always heard about.

JimZ 03-09-2007 02:40 PM

I live in Philly, but I haven't had to go to a junkyard for anything yet. You may want to take a drive down Passyunk Ave toward where all the car dealerships are. There's a stretch where the Shell refinery is that looks like a couple scrapyards and a lot of mechanics and used parts joints. Welcome to Philly!
