1987 300D: about to do my calculations for the past 15 or so tanks, probably will have that done by the end of the week (takes forever to enter all those receipts into Excel). I think I'm getting about 24 mpg on the last two tanks, all city (well, more like suburbs and back roads in the country ... but lots of slowing, hills, start, stop) and stretches of highway that are highly congested. Have been using ULSD, but I don't think I can blame the drop on that. Usually don't do too well in this type of weather. In December/January when we were having milder weather, I was getting around 26.5 for the same driving patterns. I haven't taken a road trip in ages ... would love to see how it does out in the open. I can remember getting 31-32 on cruising road trips.

86 SDL getting 21 to 23 city and 25+ on the highway.

Last week was the first time I saw the ULSD sticker on the pump. We'll see if this tank is any different. Judging by the gauge after 300 miles, it seems consistent.

I experienced a loss of fuel economy shortly after the introduction to ULSD, too.

I had air leaks throughout the fuel system, return lines weeping, delivery valve seals, spin-on filter clogging twice. Mileage averaged about 18 - 20 mpg in the winter, and 24 mpg in the summer while my 350SD got its 3.0 liter transplant.

Replaced all the above and did an injection system purge. This winter, I'm averaging..........................about 27 mpg.

I'm getting 2ompg city and 23 mpg on a very recent long trip to LA and back.
This is after a major maintenence tune up with valve adjustment was done. Car is running OK except one clogged fuel injector but I sense an engine rebuilt with in the next couple of years. I have options and time on my side.

I get 31 MPG no matter how I drive on my 92 300D 2.5 turbo. This mileage is with a bad #5 injector (compression blowing through injector body) and two pretty clogged nozzles. I'm looking forward to see if my mileage improves after I pick up the car from the diesel shop today.

Wow... I am very surprised. Really not bad for 4,000 lb cars (300D's)
I knew the newer diesels (after 85-86) got upwards of 40 MPG, but wanted to see how I compared to everyone....

The 92 300D gets about 35mpg, I drive like a granny on the highway, half the trip to work is 55, the rest is 65. The 95 300 gets about 32, driven by the same old duff.

I still get an average of 22 mpg in the 83 300d with 85-90% of city driving. It does 26-28 on the highway.
