He might say - oh, I meant 28 mpg. It'll probably get 38 mpg at a steady 35 mph. Slow speed in top gear for an entire tankfull. Paul.

Yeah, that sounds more like it. Mine averages 28 with some city but mostly highway miles.

Up in Buffalo NY you cant find a MBz D for sale. So I had to resort to the internet. Goin' to Philly to pick up my "new" commuter car in a week. '95 E300. Was looking atthe older 300D ( and hoped to find a 80-85 CD), and I thought the "Ebay milage" figures were inflated from what I saw. Hey, the sellers were RARELY the owners.

Ask me if I like my Ebay car once it makes the 400 mile trek to its new garage!

One fella in MI had a nice 87 2.5 td 190 series for sale. Now that car I beleive would eke 40mpg highway out on hard tires and no headwind. He claimed it, and he was a owner. Spoke to the man too, straight shooter it seemed.

I have no idea what my "new" 95 300 will get. Frankly, for what I paid for it, I'll be happy if it make the 400 mile trip back home. Stupid, stupid low price, and I hope that doesnt mean a stupid buyer ( me!). 1/2 what I expected to pay for a decent mid 90's.

Hope I'm not aksing about an injector pump here in two weeks! Ac is done, and I'll start looking for a tranny to rebuild and R&R when IT happens.

Anyway, I plan to get to know the workings of this machine quite intimately. And even though I have built bbc engines ( hence my username), I've never played with a diesel.

My first mission is to understand and adjust injector timing. Figure if I can nail that, everything else will be a breeze. Maybe !?

I'm psyched about joining the MBz fold though. I commute near 60 miles a day, and would sure love to do that on 2 gallons of diesel....

or if your in Buffalo NY...... diesel cut w/Buffalo wing fryer grease!

At least that's the plan once I understand the injector timing, valves etc on the engine. ( with WING GAS vanity plates!)

Looks like if you've plumbed a fuel cell on a drag car, the veggie conversion is somewhat analogous. long lengths of steel braided line.

Hope I'm not WC Fields' sucker here. Bringing diesel money ( not much!) and a rosary for the ride home.

Freakin' my wife out when I announce in a month we're running to FLA in the "new" MBz with over 200K on it! Hey, I have three weeks to flog on it and square everything away.

Bah, she thinks I;m insane anyhow....

long enough first post here I guess! Good day y'all!

Oh, question.... I run fleet oil in my older mechanical cam bbc's ( Rotella, Pennzoil, Delo, etc), what is THE proper oil for a diesel? I was going to use the same fleet oil. Synth in the axle. ( but not in a 200K mile tranny!).

Saw a w140 with the 350 motor in it on NYC craigslist. Also said it got 38mpg .

Never have done better than about 25mpg in mine, though have heard 27-29mpg on a light foot.

Here's the response:

Miles per gallon depends on how you drive. If drive correctly you will get better gas mileage. I drive this vehicle daily and know what gas mileage this gets. If this vehicle was a TURBO i would get less gas mileage. THAT YOU SHOULD SINCE YOU KNOW SO MUCH. My brother has a turbo and he gets 30 miles per gallon. I am a car person, I know my vehicle as well as many others. Get your info correct sir.

I thought, generally speaking, that turbo diesels got better mileage than the same engine sans turbo.

I get about 29mpg in my 300CD with mostly highway driving @ 65mph.

I have a 76 300D I was getting 26-27mpg once hit 28 might have been a math fluke or an incomplete fill up though. in the winter now i am getting 22 I am hoping thats just because of the winter.

I am hoping to make improvements to 30mpg I really want 30mpg how practical is that ? its old and rusted but low miles 160k

A thourough tune up and driving 60mph with slow, easy acceleration should get you there. As for the tune up part make sure your valves are adjusted, air and fuel filters are new, no leaking fuel lines or injector return lines, no significant vacuum leaks, air the tires up a bit, and new transmission fluid should do it.

Oh, what about my "I thought, generally speaking, that turbo diesels got better mileage than the same engine sans turbo." Is that right?

I have no idea about turbo's I thought they reduced mpg economy in favor of power ?? no idea though.

Is there a good post on the locations and sources of all the filters (fuel etc..) that I need to mess with ? ie can I go to the local auto parts store and buy these filters or must I goto mercedes or online ?

Is there a good instructable for this tune up ? if not once I piece it all together I will make one :-)

60 is about tops anyway though I think I have a binding throttle linkage (my friend a mechanic says it "feels" like it might be binding. but I never go over 60mph anyway :-) Usually cruising at around 50-55

I am also a granny on the accelerator :-) thats how I get 24mpg out of my jeep with 31" mudds and 4 inches of lift :-)

If you can get 24mpg out of a jeep you certainly know how to baby a throttle.
The local autoparts store has them all. There's a little debate about which is best, but the difference is pretty minor.
A haynes mercedes diesel manual is a great investment. Searching and asking on this forum will work too.

You're clearly talking with someone who cannot divide numbers properly.

well the 31" tires are a curse and a blessing mixed for economy. around where I live mostly level terrain no major hills etc.. if you REALLY baby the throttle not so much to annoy but never hammer it the larger tires improve effeciency since you go "further" per axle rotation. this means you run lower RPM at cruising speed.

BUT here is the curse. if you hit some HILLY terrain like when I go up to the pocono's they MURDER your economy :-) 8-12mpg in the nasty big hills country :-) but even in the pocono's I usually get 12-16mpg if I am careful.

One time we went to huntsville AL and I went nearly 2 whole tanks with ZERO slowdown never going below 60-65mph just straight on highway no exits no stops and I was hitting SOOO close to 26mpg 25.2 25.4 ohhh so close :-) and that was with 3 people and gear speeds from 60-70mph.

Its a good vehicle if you treat it right. even though the engine is basically toast now I will not sell it the most I ever could get for it was $500 and I have $2k in upgrades. (suspension lift shocks hell $700 just for 4 tires!!) so I would rather keep it till I can afford to replace the engine than get raped trying to sell it. I love that truck!

I also have a 74 VW Thing :-)

I hope I can eek similar performance increases from my 300D
