83 300D Headlights; Question on replacement

I am looking at the following headlight replacements:

http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=219008B79219008H9Z&year=1983&make=MB&model=300-DT-001&category=All&part=Headlight+Sealed+Beam

Keeping in mind that I have no reservations about spending money on products that last vs. spending money on junk that doesn't. Which of the above bulbs would be best suited for stock replacements? I don't want to go with a wattage above the stock bulbs (OK, 10 watts maybe) as I don't want to put any additional strain on 24 year old wiring.

Thanks!!

From the options available....

From the selection in the link, I would have to go with the "Silver Star" lights. I am running those on my F-150, initially changed to the Silver Stars about 5 or 6 years ago......had to replace one of the bulbs after about 3 years of service, but the other is still burning just as bright as the day it was new.

Personally, I intend to switch to e-code lights on my 300D......sooner or later....must probably when one of the existing Halogen sealed beams burns out....

SB

Note...the headlights on my F-150 do not use sealed beams!!

The silver star are the highest rated in the industry. Check around.

For the beam pattern and illumination of forward view, I would still avoid sealed beams and get even the cheap E-code type lights because the distribution of the E-codes (aftermarket or not) is much better and there is more foreground light than the sealed beams.

FWIW, I was able to buy a pair of cheap E-code aftermarkets (Denji brand, similar to Autopal) for $10 each. The Silverstar bulbs I got were I think $20 for a pair, so that translates to roughly $30 total, just $6 more than when you buy the sealed beams and you still get the bright Silverstars plus similar illumination of the E-code types. Just my thoughts.

FWIW I have had nothing but trouble from silver stars in my Ford. Very short life and very high replacement cost. I went through 3 of them in less than 2 years (and yes, I did install them correctly). I've since given up on them and used standard bulbs. No problems after a year or so with them.

Were you using Osram SilverStars, or Sylvania SilverStars? They have similar names, but one has better quality than the other.

The 300D headlights are available just about anywhere. I believe they are 6024's. Stick with the halogens and if you want white lights, there a few options out there.
