ATF smooth, Diesel rough!
Hello guys!
I would like to hear your opinion about this. Two days ago I changed my engine oil and while doing that, I decided to try to clean my injectors using ATF. I readed this was possible due to the detergents the ATF has. I made a little fuel tank from a gallon and poured 2 quarters of ATF and completed the gallon with Jet-1 fuel. I had the engine burn half of the gallon and the idle got really really smooth and quiet. I poured the remaining half gallon in my fuel tank (which was a 1/3 full) and the car was running like it never did before! Yesterday I filled my tank with normal diesel and now the anoying nailing noise from the injectors is back!!!    Why could this have happened? |
Did you have the injectors tested for pop pressure and spray pattern?
|
nope, my experiment was that, a simple experiment.... :o
You know, I was there, waiting for the engine oil to drain.... I saw an empty gallon container, the atf quarts... I recalled having a couple of Jet-A1 fuel somewhere in the warehouse.... With the mix I did, the engine was running incredibly smooth! I was very very impressed with the smoothness and the quietness of the idle. |
A Diesel will run very quietly and smoothly on ATF, that should not be a surprise.

Using ATF frequently has been known to coke injectors.

Using ATF has done nothing but clean mine out. Of course I only add mine when I change the fuel filter. I top off the fuel filter with ATF before I screw it on then purge the system of air like you should when changing the fuel filter. The other method is to just add a quart to the fuel tank and drive it.
Maybe you got air in the system? |
The 616 and 617 will run very quiet on ATF, veg oil, motor oil and just about any other thicker oil you would add to the fuel. Why? I dont know. The engine sounds much better- but that certainly does not mean it is better for the engine. Even 1/2 gallon of any of these "fuels" will quiet the engine when added to a full tank. The louder engine will return when the oil is no longer burned. Same event occurs when cleaning the injectors with diesel purge.
