Broken band?
I've been tracking down a noise in the front of 300sd. Originally I thought it was wheel bearings, so I replaced them. Still there. I've found that it is a certain tire making the noise, if I rotate the tires the noise follows one. The tire making the noise sounds like it has a handfull of pebbles bouincing around inside of it too. Is it possible that one of the bands in the tire is broken?
*edit. Apon more searching, I realize the proper term is belt.

There may be something actually in the tire. If not the tire is garbage if the belts are broken or not from your description. The rim is not cracked? Looks normal?

You're referring to "cord separation" and it does happen to old tires. But, when it happens, the vehicle will shake severely from about 45 mph on up. The runout of the tire is huge.........1/4" or more.
So, whatever it is, the tire has not failed internally (belts). |
