The 72bhp OM616 was used in G Wagen and Tempo Traveler van, it has same IP but different governor, also different spill timing and higher injector pressure, rpm also went up by around 1000, with a euro 300D 5 speed, it performs pretty decently.

Also, wagons don't weigh that much more than sedans, do they?

I read somewhere a few years ago that they did have a different IP. All the XX7D Mercedes vans have a 70+ horsepower 616. It's what I had in my 307d which was a 22' class A motorhome. It would do about 68mph on the Autobahn but slowed down quickly on hills. It had a 5 spd (1st was a granny gear)but I don't know what the gear ratio was. It weighed a LOT more than a 240TD.
Why didn't MB ever produce a turbo version of the 616? Once they'd turbo'd the 617 you'd think it would have been a simple no-brainer to also do it to the 616.

Well, I did mention in my post that perhaps the fact that it was a Euro made it faster ... so ... I wasn't kind of in the right direction ...

Anyone ever pull a bad 5 cylinder out of a 300TD and stick a 2.4 in it with a 4sp?

Virtually impossible to do unless you get rid of the SLS because a 616 with a hydraulic pump in the head is non-existent in the US.
