Ok I am replacing my cv boots with the astoria cv boots. The packet of grease that comes with the boots seems small. I checked the mb manual that I have and it states 230 grams of fluid. That converts to right around 8 oz.

Can you guy's confirm this and is it ok to use cv joint grease that sta-lube makes?
The old oil in the joints was more liquid, kind of like rear end oil with moly. Maybe my old grease had just broken down?

Any way I am using the flex boot tool that I bought and it work's fine however the tool would not expand the new boot far enought to go over the can on the outter side of the axle. After several tries I ended up installing the outter boot from the inner side of the axle by reversing the boot on the tool and sliding it to the oppisite side of the axle. The inner can is slightly smaller than the outter can on my car.

Please give me a head's up on the cv grease and I am going to try to finish up this job tomorrow.

One packet is plenty. 8oz of heavy grease is not much by volume.

If the package is not labeled and you doubt it's 230grams, take it to the post office (Or somebody with a postage scale) and ask them to weigh it.

I don't think one pack is enough. I used the Astora boots on my 1984 300SD with there grease. After about 3000 miles I had a strange noise coming from the rear end. So, just to be safe I pumped about 4 oz of rear end oil in each boot. No more noise. Just to be safe I would use 2 packs of grease in each boot.
Harbor Freight has some nice stainless steel zip ties I have used with great success. See my other post on this subject. Just my humble opinion.

So did I mess us on my conversion? When my mercedes manual speaks of 230 or 310 grams of cv spider joint oil they are talking about wieght, rather than volume?
The one cv boot that I believe had not leaked any oil, had enough oil to cover the spider when the axle was vertical and if I use that as an indicator one 4.0 once tube of cv boot grease didn't look to be enough. Once again the 4.0 oz is volume rather then weight. This must be the root of the confussion.
Does anyone know if the Sta-lube cv joint grease is ok to use?

4 oz. is a measure of weight. Some fluids are heavier then others. Some oils are heavier then others. If they wanted to express volume they would give you the cc's or the cubic centimmeters.

Rear end oil and regular bearing grease will not work properly. They will just sling to the outside of the boot by centrifugal force.

I use wheel bearing NLG-2 grease from Castrol or other makers, works out pretty good.

It would seem to me that sythetic differential lube might have real possibilities here, or would it "eat" the rubber.
