My 616 toast?
Check the photos and give me your input on the cylinder liners. I think it'd have to be resleeved to be used. Also, no signs of the headgasket failing either.

i am not a machinist but they look pretty bad!
may as well go through it if you are planning to keep it. although it would be a lot cheaper to find a good running car with rust or other significant cosmetic issues and swap the motors. buying a running driving car allows you to do a fairly thorough evalutaion of the engine. i would be ruluctant to trust a junkyard motor on a car this old. tom w

I'm curious what would cause that liner issue! Would gasoline do that?
The head looks okay, no dropped valves or anything of that nature. Motor turned over by hand tight.

i don't know. it does look seriously eroded. my lovely daughter #3 toasted my beautiful california 74 240 by running gas in it but i can't remember exactly what it looked like. i think the cylinders were scored but other than that i can't remember. and the block has gone to the great salvage yard in the sky.

What's the history of the motor? Any idea what did it? It sure looks to me as if there have been head gasket problems. There is rust on the block around the cooling passages. How can rust have migrated to these areas without water/coolant getting there?

Not a clue, the car was $300. The headgasket was solid, the pics are crap due to the sun. There was no coolant into the cylinder bores at all. I figure it ran on straight water or green coolant.

Looks like it may be moisture (rust) damage from sitting a long time with their valve(s) open.

Hrm, not sure how long it sat. Didn't look like for TOO long. Maybe a few years, but the top end was still together when I got it... My SD sat for a few years at a police impound.
