cv joint/grease volume/flexx boot tool update
Well I finished my cv boot replacement. I found out that my shop manual was correct. I was able to pack the cv joints with 230 and 310 grams of cv grease. The trick to getting it all in is to pack it into the can with a bicycle tire iron or something like that, Then pick up on the axle shaft and when the axle telescopes out it will suck the cv joint grease in. That will allow room for the required amount.
After flushing out the old oil I installed the new boots using the Astoria flex tool. I had to turn one of the boots inside out and expand it with the tool so that I could install it from the side of the axle that had the smaller can. Then I would just turn the boot rightside out after it was on the shaft. I had to do this because the new boot while on the boot expanding tool would not go over the larger can. It would go over the can with out the boot but didn't have enough power to clear the can with the boot on the tool. Not too much of a problem once I figured out I could do it that way. I also replaced the side seals while I had the axles out. They weren't leaking but I was there and they have been in 28 years. It just seemed like a good idea. As for the cv joint grease I used. It was sta-lube cv joint grease. It comes in a 113g tube. I used 8.5 tubes. I also got some s.s. band clamps ( for cv boots) from Napa and a band clamp tool to cinch them up. They worked well. I didn't like the clamps that astoria supplied with the cv boot. I found the Astoria cv boot tool worked well. 1979 300sd Mark Last edited by beagle3; 03-13-2007 at 12:19 AM. |

Way to go!
Sounds good too me. But why did you use 8.5 tubes of cv lube for 113 grams. Something doesn't seem to add up. Also, I sent you an email as I am looking for some one to put new boots on my axles. Oh, I guess I see it now. You used like 4 plus tubes to get you over the 300 grams needed in each joint.

Beagle, which Astoria CV boot did you use? I noticed that there are a variety of sizes available and I'd assume our axles are built heavier and larger than most out there on "cars".
