300 sdl that I looked at, and not touching for the price

I looked at a 300 sdl in Arlington, TX, for a friend about a week ago. Everything looked fine till I started it up. The whole car had a buzzing vibration through it. The IP was leaking diesel from the seals, the engine was vibrating unnturally, The one window wouldn't close ll the way, and the catalytic converter/trap oxidizer was still in place. The hilarious part about it was, the guy I was trying to deal with kept on waying that he had experts check the car out, and there was nothing wrong with the drivetrain. He was saying that while there was a puddle of diesel growing underneath the engine. I couldn't believe that. And it got worse. He tried to tell me that the puddle of diesel dripping underneath the car was natural for a diesel. He refused to let me take the car to a mechanic, saying that the experts said it was a fine car, and that he didn't have time for me to do that.
What this guy didn't know is that I have one of these cars, and have put a anew engine into it. The problem was a head gasket when all was said and done. I couldn't believe the gaul he had to tell me that I"d have to take his word for how good mechanically it was.
He waned 4800 for it with 250000 miles on it. I told him it was worth $1000, as it might have a bent crank, or need a new IP. According to him I was full of $hit. Too bad. The rest of the car was practucally immaculate. Would be a nice piece to restore.

I always drive my MB when I go look at another one. It adds shows you know the cars which can be a good bargaining tool.

Sometimes it's just plain entertaining to listen to their pitch.

When I bought my first SDL, I was a little green and did not know everything to look for. The first indication that the previous owner's mechanic did not know his arse from a hole in the ground was when I found the A/C fuse was a 30 amp. When all said and done, the A/C compressor had to be replaced (not only was the clutch drawing about 3 times too much electricity, but it was leaking) and then the A/C relay was fried from the overload. It's really lucky that the relay went as the fuse did not. It could have easily burn the car up.

The problem is that many people find a mechanic that keeps the car running but does not do the repair properly. The owner's still think that 'their' mechanic is the best.... Live and learn.

Everybody thinks that "their mechanic" or "their doctor" or "their dentist" is "the best"..............until reality finally sets in after many years...........after many mis-diagnoses.............and after considerable expenditure of money.

Good to always remember for every class of Dentist, Doctor, Lawyer or Mechanic - somebody is top of the class and somebody is at the bottom.
Next time you are admiring your MD's diploma - ask him where he graduated in his class......

I looked at a 300SDL that they were asking $6500 for. 230k miles, it ran pretty well, just down on power a bit. But the rust OMG it was swiss cheese! I have never seen such rust, to make it worse they tried to hide it, they had a $30 paint job that was nothing but orange peel on the car. So from 50ft away it looked decent.

The rust was insane, they were on drugs if they thought it was worth $6,500.
