newbie with some questions.

Hello everybody! new to the mercedes diesel scene. tinkered with many gm 6.5 turbo and 6.2 diesel, but just bought a 1992 300sd project. Read some post concerning my issues and they seem to be common problems. noisey valves, wire harness from mass air sensor dry rotted, at WOT loads up with smoke. The car was neglected and then sat over a year, that explains alot. Runs strong no to little smoke in normal operation. 250K plenty of power. I hope with some TLC I can clear up some of the issues. Have some question to get started.
1.Wire harness, where is the cheapest place to get one? if I can? Has anyone ever made there own?
2. diesel purge? Is this a brand name? injection cleaner? please some info?
3. rims. will 17 or 18inch amg rims fit on it?
4. Does anyone carry a K&N style air filter?
Thank you for any input. I'm sure this is the first of many post.

welcome to the forum Hans ("hands"), as to "diesel purge":

I think that several vendors sell a "diesel purge."

Based on what I have seen and read, Diesel Giant is a really good source, seems to be well respected, etc...

Here is a post that I just pulled up where Diesel Giant posts re diesel purge:

Diesel purge today

I would look to Diesel Giant first, just based on what I have read, gluck.

Welcome
Don't forget to consider host of this forum and web site, who also carries parts. They seem to be out of diesel purge at the moment though...
There is also a used parts section in the forum.
Good luck

I hope you got that W140 cheap.

Anyway yeah 18in AMG's will fit really well. As for the wiring harness give Phil a call, or the dealer. AFAIK their is no aftermarket.

K&N is really a bad idea. our motors have no throttle body, so even at idle there is no vacuum to speak of in the manifold. the stock air filter is more restrictive than a K&N would be, but it is oversized for the need of the motor. a K&N unless weekly cleaned & OILED is going to be noisy, and it will allow fine dirt into the motor. get a quality stock style filter and your motor will be happy.

On Mercedes K&N are a waste, more so when you have a turbo. Buy the stock paper filter.

need help!rough idle/smoke! sometimes?

1992 300sd. runs smooth idle good no smoke. but sometimes she'll idle rough, almost skip and smoke. (unburnt diesel). Have bad wiring harness wondering if pump or timing is effected by bad harness. any help would be appreciated.

Does it do it just on start up? If so its probably a weak glow plug, or the afterglow relay acting up. (I think those cars have an afterglow relay, not sure where it is I'm sure the FSM would say)

Ref. K&N air filter.

There was a long and very well researched article on this site a couple of years ago about K&N filters. The conclusion was that basically they aren''t worth the effort and esp. the cost.

hatterasguy it gives rough idle off and on, cold or hot. my 1992/603 doesn't have rack adjustment pin? or does it . next seems to be compression test and valve adjustment. any helpful hints would be welcomed. went with stock air cleaner.

well, hands, there is no valve adjustment on the 60x series motors, so that can safely be eliminated... unless you have a bad cam... white smoke is too much fuel, or water being ingested by the motor. have the injectors tested.

See I am not sure how computer controlled that engine is. I am somewhat familer with the older 603 and the later 606, but I skipped that generation. I *think* the injection pump on that thing is pretty similer to the older 603. And for a rough idle on an older 603 I would start with delivery valve seals, and having the injectors checked.

You need to get a FSM to see how that IP is controlled and what could cause a rough idle like that. That could have a system somewhat like the 606, in that case it could be a sensor.

I wouldn't bother with a compression test. Has it been burning any oil? Does it start up right away when cold? Pop the oil cap and check for blow by. If these three things come back good the compression is fine.

Before checking compression I would check IP timing. I think you use an RIV light on that engine for this, but am not sure.

thanks for the help guys. I find that the tough thing about this forum. there's few different motors, but every answer the post according to the their motor. have to sort thur things. little easier with chevy, only to different motors. Anyways. motor start great. even in cold new england. very little oil usage, but really been on it! " itlian tune up". I will have to open oil cover to see any blow by. impressed with torque. pretty quick for such a boat. Wiring harness goes to back of pump. can change idle with wiggle, but not enough to completely pin piont. injectors most likely need help. car very neglected. anyone with fuel shop in new england? another question plastic cup injector sits in . what is its purpose? is there a washer for a seal on injector?
