You need the special dipstick tool! It's around $40.

From factory was sealed for life in 1999 therefore was not needed.

"Life" it turns out, is about 60k miles in 2007.

yeah, i would recomend changing out ur fluid if its been a while, as said before, u need the spaecial tool.
maybe if ur good friends with ur local mechanic, he might let u borrow one?
there is no such thing as an everlasting fluid that will not breakdown under heat and stress!

Not really, you have to take it to them to get it changed out.....
Which probably means folks put it off, the tranny fails, and it adds to Mercedes growing bad reputation. Well deserved reputation!

Guess you would be even less pleased with a E320CDI that didn't have a engine oil dip stick???

The system with the 722.6xx trans works. It is very particular about its fill level and requires a specific syn fluid and SDS or IR thermo to get correct.

Mine also doesnt leak so is not much need to check it.

When I was in MBCA, at a meet, someone had one of the first D's, forget the year, in America. Open the hood, hey look, there's another one! Just in case one breaks, I guess. He mentioned no oil dipstick, idiot light instead. Picked up in NJ a few days previous, nice car, didn't want to say anything derogatory. Dipstick dealer installed option, if you think you really need one. Did not inquire as to tranny dipstick. Ain't technology great?

dipstick

My 97 S600 has a sealed tranny. Just had to by the "tool" (that's what MB calls it) from the dealer. I have since found out there are other cheaper varieties of the dipstick out there on the web. It's a tool in that you can not put the tranny tool / dipstick all the way in flush to the top of the tube (it sticks out a couple of inches even though you are bottoming out on the trans pan). They do this to be sure you don't keep it there and start driving (hood won't close). You put the cap back on the tranny tube with no dipstick before driving.

When I did the transmission service (fluid and filter) - the procedure is pretty much identical to my 126 chassis. The trans pan bolts have these little spacers on the S600 so you can't over tighten the pan - pretty nifty.
