Hot Stumble and No Starting
It warmed up to 75 here today.
I've noticed a couple of times recently, in cooler weather, that when my engine (1984 300D) has been hot that coming to a halt, or to idle from faster RPM's, will cause the engine to stumble if I don't put my foot on the pedal a little. This has only manifested itself maybe twice. Today I was almost home and got the same thing. Only this time it stalled, and I couldn't start it at all. Felt absolutely like a fuel starvation problem. Went back on my bike after dinner and it started right up. Drove around a little and was able to reproduce the symptoms. I looked for air bubbles in the clear filter and there are none. I don't see any leaks. The only thing I can think of that would have changed since last summer is recently the station I've been buying fuel at switched to ULSD. Could it just be a weird batch of fuel or something? I don't see this behavior at all when it's cool, though. I'll report back after a new tank of diesel if I notice a change. Ben |

Have you adjusted the rack damper? It sounds a bit like the damper is turned in too far.

Just replied to a post about similar problem. Did not shut off, yet felt it might, it was that bad. Scary. When I got home, no shake. Cannot diagnose when it's smooth at idle, in my garage. Am using ULSD, we all will be soon. The Rack Damper adjustment is more for a fluctuating idle than occasional shake. Have not noticed being weather related, maybe so. Damned global warming!

I don't really have any reason to suspect the ULSD, it's just the only thing I can think of that's different than during hot weather last year.
BTW I should have stated 1984 300D, with a rebuilt naturally aspirated engine, a 'gift' from the PO who ran the old engine out of oil. It has about 55,000 on it. No Rack Damper. Ben |
