'97 E300 I need some quick torque converter tips!
I'm changing the transmission fluid right now this evening on '96 E300. How do I rotate the torque converter so that the drain bolt is visible?
Hopefully someone will chime in with a quick answer! TIA!!!

Turn the crank bolt in the normal direction of travel until the drain plug is on the bottom. It should be 27mm.

Awesome, thanks Jim. I couldn't see the front of the engine from underneath - looked around again and I see the wide skinny plastic shield I needed to remove. Just removed it and I can see the crank bolt.
If I'm standing in front of the car, facing the front of the car, which direction do I rotate the crank? Clockwise or counterclockwise? Sorry, I'm still so new to this car I don't know which direction the engine turns! Thanks again

Easiest refference is to turn the way that makes the fan move as it should. Watch the fan blades as when the engine is running it pulls air through the radiator.

Is the fan attached to the engine?

Direction of rotation. Easy, stand in front of the car and have someone start and stop the car a couple of times. Look at the accesories. Which way are they rotating?
Now you can rotate the engine as previously mentioned, but there is another way. I have used it since around 1958. You crawl under there with a light and a big flatblade screwdriver. Using the casting as a fulcrum, simply lever the Torque Converter until you get the drain plug in the proper position. Do it in the direction of engine rotation. Make sure the flat blade is parallel to the metal surface of the TC. In other words be gentle and don't make gouges in the metal. The problem with the turning the crank with a socket and ratchet is that the first time requires an assistant under the car, or you going back and forth. Once it's located place a mark on the crank pulley so that next time it is easy to line it up. Steve |

Thanks for the photos and descriptions, it is much appreciated!
I got the job finished late last night. I discovered it's a wee bit difficult to turn when the shift lever is in "P". Put it into "N" and it was all easy. Thanks guys!

Parrots pic is looking from the back of the engine. The engine when standing at the headlights and looking towards the back of the car spins clockwise. McCool300TD
