1985 300 turbo diesel rough idle

Hi--

So here I go with another question. When first driving in the morning the car after warming up seems ok. At the first stop sign I wait and it idles very rough like it's misfiring. After a short drive it runs fine even at idle. Then today it seems to idle rough in stop and go traffic at a stopped idle.
I was thinking it may be a bad glow plug not igniting at idle. Could someone please help with what it may be and a link to how to change the glow plugs on a 1985 300 Turbo Diesel.

Thanks,
Tony

Glow plugs are only on for a few seconds after it starts running so if the bad idle lasts longer than that, it's not the glowplugs. I'd run some diesel purge through it before doing anything else.

You'll find a lot about it by searching here on it. It's an injector cleaner. Check out the Diesel Giant site, I think he sells a complete kit for using it.

When's the last time valves were adjusted? Filters?

I would try the Purge, but get the stuff from Diesel Giant and do it yourself. When I first got my Benz, I thought doing a diesel Purge was some huge job and a local indy charged me $80 to do it. I would also (possibly prior to doing purge) check the rack damper, aka, idle adjustment screw or governor or something like that. Then try cracking each injector line to see if a cylinder is completely missing. If it is, remove that injector and see if the miss follows the injector. If it does, then you've got a bad injector, so take 'em all out and have them pop tested and cleaned at a Bosch shop. GP's aren't your problem if it idles poorly when hot. Good luck!

I also encounter OCCASIONAL shaking problems at idle with hot engine, as a matter fact just a few hours ago. Got as worse as it's ever been, sitting at stop light. Got home, smooth like babies feet. This happens with the CD and SD. When not exibiting problem at home, you know, when I can do a diagnostic, cannot determine cause. Has not left me stranded, yet. Don't expect it to. ANNOYING.
