Sloppy Stearing on my 82 300D...

My steering is pretty sloppy but i'm just gotten used to it. What usually causes this problem? I know I saw a "tighten up that loose steering" DIY page somewhere but I can't seem to find it now. Thanks.

It is probably a worn coupling between the steering shaft and the steering box. Get someone to rock the wheel and watch the end of the steering shaft where it comes out of the firewall and goes into the steering gear box. If the coupling is worn you will see the shaft rotate and the input shaft to the box stay still. It is not a big job to replace the coupling but it does take time and a bit of mechanical ability, but no special tools, at least on the 115 series.

not sure if it's the same thing you're talking about but you should replace your idler pin...

tie rods could need a replace...and also ball joints and/ or control arm bushings

you can inspect the boots on the ball joints, tie rods, and the look of the rubber on the upper and lower control arms visually in most cases to see if they need to be replaced. and if you're mechanically inclined and have a few necessary tools (spring compressor, pickle fork/pitman arm puller) you can do it yourself..

and if an inspection reveals no loose parts you can adjust the steering box.

Mine is the center link, known as a drag link too. Can't see the play on the ground, only when it's up in the air. Looks easy to fix and it's cheap too. Get a new steering damper while you're at it, has to come half off anyway.
