How Important: Changing Transaxle Fluid
Hey all, I am wondering how important changing the transaxle fluid is on our diesels. I found a 14mm hex tool, applied some lube, and had a cheater bar - with no success on removing the fill plug.
So I will probably either have to wait for fall (getting really hot outside already here in Phoenix to work under cars) or take it to a mechanic to change or at least loosen the plugs. What are your opinions? Thanks!

a 1/2" impact driver should do the trick. but clean the plug totally first.

I did not know MB had a transaxle...
 Yes, the diff gear oil should be changed, but I do mine every 2 years.

|
I used leg power to remove the plug on mine. The fluid was at least 17 yrs old when I took it out. Surprisingly, it was still clear(w/ a little green tint).

I used a three foot cheater bar and lifted my 130 lbs clear off the ground and slammed back down when it came loose
 . Make darn sure that plug is clean and the tool is in there all the way or it just might round out. Don't you just love allen head bolts? Does anyone else think diff fluid stinks?

diff fluid / getting the plug out

I did mine this past winter and thought the smell was just something sneaking out from the insulated coveralls due to the exersion force. Just kidding!
The fill plug came loose with a 2' breaker bar and armstrong but the drain required a hydraulic jack on the end of the bar. A firm tap on the allen driver with a small sledgehammer to make sure it was seated really well. Be sure and do the fill plug first!

If diff oil had not been changed for years, could it affect the ABS sensor in the differential on a 1992 300D? If some metallic residues from wear are dissolved in oil, I'm thinking it could be the reason for causing a "false" wheel stop detection in my rear ABS...
Any thoughts? I'll change the oil anyhow and make sure I've got the fill plug loosened and removed first before I drain it down! Bye

I put my breaker bar + hex socket onto the diff in the right spot, then I used my hydraulic jack to lift the breaker bar....rear of the car went way up...then it went "pop!" and settled back down, plug was loose.
Did this for both cars, worked great.As for the smell. The mobil 1 synthetic stuff smells like natural gas...its weird.

Why does it stink?...anything coming out of something called a "differential" wouldn't stink...oh wait

Actually the old fluid had less of a smell to it than the new synthetic stuff......our cars both had the original stuff in there most likely....it was like brown syrup!
