Sure was hopeful for an easy fix, as in a valve hanging open since it was too tight. I'm pulling the cover to check the cams anyhow.

If you're not running synthetic already, you should give it a try. It will quiet noisy lifters.

MB diesel has had hydraulic lifters since the W124.

Self adjusting valves

I'd been told my W124 has self adjusting valves, no adjustments needed. HOWEVER, I did the O-rings once on the injector pump. After doing it, it was real noisy. I heard that it was probably a bit of air in the lines, and that it would eventually work its way out. But I couldn't stand the noise, talked to my brother who has a diesel Rabbit. He said to slowly back off the injectors just a tiny bit until a bit of fuel comes out. When the fuel starts spitting out, tighten it back up, and go onto the next one. It worked! It might have eventually worked it out on its own, but the noise was too much.

How much are new injectors?

I heard that the Bozio (?) injectors from Italy are FAR superior to the Bosch. Many on this site said their car runs MUCH smoother. Are new injectors that much? Maybe instead of doing a cleaning, maybe I should replace mine. My car has 103k, and 16 years old.

That little trick your brother told you is *how* you get the air out of the lines.

Still, a good trick. THNX!

Yeah, I'm thinking Bosio are $32 ea. shipped. Buuut..

OK, I've gone from " oh , maybe it just a valve too tight " hanging open too much - not as in a noisy tappet, this aint no noisy tappet). Then to timing the injector, which seemsm easy enough with the 2 bulb tool, but it seems to be a "gang" time, meaning the timing is set for all six at once. So one couldnt be off. They're not all off. Just one. So, now to injectors.

Sure would like to isolate it before I mess with stuff. Was going to have the injectors "tested". A It'll be near as much as $32 X 6 for new tips I'm sure.

The "clang" is accompanied by a bad miss when cold, a stumble is more like it. Now I'm "hoping" its just an injector, and not a valve job. But, ton of good machine shops in the area if we must. Again, would like to diagonse it. Guess intake comes off, and injectors come out. Compression test it. ( how do you shut off the fuel, the "STOP" screw in the top of the canister before you crank for compression test?). New nozzles. This is a new kind of machine to me, so I better take my tme and label everything.

Have to make up a "needed" tools list to boot! Spring landscaping will have to wait until my new ride is eating up the road again!

EDIT: Just checked Russell's page, the 606 nozzles are $37ea. Still.

I'm trying to figure out how y'all play with the injectors with the engine running. On this 606 the intake manifold ( which looks like something off a 58 Chrysler 300 ) obscures any access or view of the injectors.

Follow the lines to the IP, unscrew it there. That way the fuel falls to the floor instead of puddling the injector bores. This works if you are trying to find a faulty injector.

I would take them all out and have them tested and possibly cleaned.

Thats what I'm planning on. Picked up an intake gasket today, popping the intake off and pulling them all. Found two Bosch authorized dealers local; I'll take them to the one that didnt have to ask if they do MBZ injectors!

Guess I dont need those Bosio nozzles if I'm pulling them for a rebuild by a shop, yes?

Guys, really sorry to "hijack" this thread, but your help has been phenomenal. Thnx and sorry for hijacking.

Don't forget to anti-seize your glow plugs when you are there.

It depends on what is bad about them. However, you can simply ask them to do Bosio nozzles if you want.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, on loosening those injectors while running. Just loosen them a TINY BIT, just enough to where they're spitting out fuel. Don't come up with puddles of fuel on your floor. And you only do this if there's air in there. I had air in there from me replacing my O-rings.

Gotchya, I was inferring folks used it to isolate the bad injector. Like pullinga plug ona bad cylinder.

Dont fret, it looks like I have to disconnect the throttle linkage to access the injectors onthe 606. And I should pull the intake to replace all those hardened lines. Naw, dont think firing it up is in the cards.

If I "roll the dice" on teh GP's I'll be pulling the head for sure!
