ok, tell me about Zach's 81' 300d euro man. trans.

hi, i have been trading lots of comments back and forth trying to figure out the purchase of an 82' 240d manual. (is this a good price for a '82 240d man.)

the comments are great and i really appreciate having this forum ! thank you !

i did get two comments that i should check out Zach's car (For Sale: 1981 300d European 4 Speed) which i did email him to inquire the current status.
can someone tell me about the rare 300d euro. i know that its rare so its more expensive, simpler than U.S. 300d, manual trans. last longer with less trouble. but what about:
- no a/c, can you put one in ?
- rear quarter panel needs to be repainted, can they match it or repaint the whole car ?
- can you get parts for it because its not a common car in the U.S. ?
- whats so great about the euro 300d?

second that '85 euro 300.. 5spd, nonturbo 603, manual climate/windows, no sunroof.. bomber.

the whole deal with the euro models is that they are no frills, and overall better manufactured with less things to break.
why add a/c with all of the extra problems, weight, and expense.. and in minneapolis?
cosmetics are cosmetic (although hope you wouldnt drive that chassis/color combo in winter).

otherwise, the fact that it is another forum member speaks for itself.
johnhefs sweet 300CD just sold on ebay for 3300, which is a steal for that well maintained rig.
hopefully it will just reappear around the forum anyways..

You certainly can put an aftermarket A/C in and this might be better than the Chrysler mess that most US spec Mercedes are cursed with.

Any competent body shop should be able to do that.

I dont see that being a problem at all really.

Most Mercedes the world over are non US Spec cars. The only really meaningful difference for me between a Euro and non Euro spec car is the Air conditionining. It is far preferable to have the non US ac than the Chrysler screw up that as I said before most Merceds in the US are cursed with. Some people seem to think that the "simplicity" of Euro spec cars with the implication that theres less to go wrong is preferable. Other than the air conditioning I dont agree. It's the same cruise control, the same electronic windows, sunroof etc which are not exclusive US spec items but were options on all Mercedes outside the US as well.

For myself. I wish my 240D had both electric windows and a sun roof and the non US spec air conditioner that it has is no great advantage since the compressor has siezed, the mounting bracket for the three rotary dials for fan speed and heat has broken in three places and the evap is probably so choked up it's practially useless.

By far the most important consideration of all will be condition not option level when looking at cars of this age. The five speed manual tranny would be about the only option peculiar to non US cars that would be really desireable for me.

- Peter.

Correct about the ac. The 240D in the US was regarded as a basic entry level car and thus did not warrant the supposedly superior Automatic climate control that the other Mercedes in the USA were equipped with.

My cars Compressor siezed about two years ago when it was still with it's previous owner. I bought it like that and was working on some ac related issues when I discovered that other problems with it.

I have not replaced the timing chain on my motor. My cars engine was rebuilt at about 160000 miles so it has at least 224000 miles on a rebuilt engine and if they replaced the timing chain at that time then it has 224K miles with that timing chain. If they used the original chain then it has 384000 miles on that chain. So chain durability on a 240D is not the problem it is on other cars such as the four cylinder gas cars that were not shipped to the USA, or the early 3,8 liter V8's that were.

One other thing. This forum is wonderful for technical information and assistance. But I treat peoples opinions on price with an ocean of salt. Everyone here seems to think you should be able to pick up perfect Mercedes for a few hundred bucks. That may be the case in some areas but in my opinion it's crap. Sometimes you have to pay for good stuff.
